Tarl Cabot sucht in der Verkleidung eines Attentäters seinen eigenen Mörder. Er ist auf der Suche nach demjenigen Mann, der ihn auf einer Brücke hinterrücks mit einem Wurfmesser ermorden wollte und stattdessen einen jungen Soldaten traf. Tarl gerät mitten hinein in die Intrigen, die um die Wettkämpfe der Tarn-Rennen von Ar gesponnen werden.
